Uzbek President Approves Plan to Expand Tashkent Metro
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a set of proposals aimed at improving passenger service quality, ensuring safety, and more efficiently utilizing the infrastructure of the Tashkent Metro. The presentation outlined plans for the long-term development of the capital’s public transport system.
It was noted that population growth in Tashkent, urban expansion, and rising passenger demand require large-scale modernization of the metro system.
In this context, an objective has been set to increase daily passenger traffic to 1.8 million people by 2030, expand the network to 79 stations, and extend total track length to 103 kilometers. A phased reduction of train intervals to 1.5–3 minutes is also planned.
Measures scheduled for 2026–2028 include upgrading technical infrastructure and modernizing civil defense facilities as part of efforts to improve service quality and strengthen system resilience.
Special attention was given to passenger safety. As a pilot project, it was proposed to install glass platform screen doors at the “Shakhristan” station.
According to international practice, such systems can reduce accidents by 80–90%, while also creating additional opportunities for advertising placement.
Priority directions also include the construction of new metro lines. Preparations are underway for feasibility and design documentation for the “Mingurik – Chilanzar market” route.
The possibility of a phased development of the “Mingurik – South Station” line is also under consideration, with a subsequent extension to the Chilanzar market.
Additional measures were discussed to create new revenue sources for the metro system, including digital advertising in trains and stations through auctions, installation of vending machines and retail outlets, construction of parking facilities near stations, and leasing vacant spaces for coworking and office use.
To improve transport accessibility, a “Park & Ride” system is proposed to allow passengers to switch from private vehicles to metro transport.
The presentation also addressed rolling stock renewal and construction of new electric depots. Between 2027 and 2030, decisions are planned on purchasing new trains and allocating land for supporting infrastructure.
A broader development strategy for the Tashkent Metro for 2027–2035 was also presented. The document envisions a twofold expansion of the network, a 2.5-fold increase in passenger traffic, the development of an environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient transport system, and improved comfort and safety standards.
Tariff policy reforms were also discussed, including international practices such as distance-based fares, subscription systems, and discounted fares for selected passenger categories.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized that in a large metropolis, the metro is a key component of transport infrastructure. He stressed the need for integrated improvements in service quality, safety, financial sustainability, and management systems.
The proposed plans were approved, and relevant agencies were instructed to begin implementation.
