Uzbekistan and UN Discuss Progress on Gender Equality
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A meeting was held in Bukhara on the sidelines of the Second Asian Women’s Forum between Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva and Nahla Haidar, Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
The talks focused on the current state and prospects of cooperation between Uzbekistan and United Nations structures in the field of gender equality and support for women.
It was noted that Uzbekistan is consistently implementing its Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality until 2030, along with key legislative acts, including the Law “On Guarantees of Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men” and the Law “On Protection of Women from Harassment and Violence.”
Nahla Haidar highly appreciated the systemic reforms being carried out in the country aimed at strengthening women’s rights, ensuring gender equality, and expanding women’s participation in public, political, social, and economic life.
During the meeting, the sides also exchanged views on increasing women’s economic activity, developing women’s entrepreneurship, particularly in rural areas, improving national legislation in line with international standards, and supporting and promoting women’s leadership.
Special attention was given to strengthening cooperation with international organizations in implementing programs aimed at protecting women’s rights and expanding their participation in sustainable development processes.
