Uzbekistan and Qatar Expand Energy Cooperation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan and Qatar have discussed expanding cooperation in the energy sector, including the implementation of joint investment projects. The talks were held in Tashkent on May 20 between Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamahmudov and Qatar’s State Minister for Foreign Trade Ahmad bin Muhammad Al-Sayed.

The discussions focused on the current state of bilateral cooperation, which both sides noted has been steadily developing due to sustained high-level political dialogue. Particular attention was given to ongoing projects involving Qatar’s Nebras Power across several regions of Uzbekistan.

According to the data presented, energy projects with a total installed capacity of 4,133 MW are being implemented in the Syrdarya, Surkhandarya, and Navoi regions. In Syrdarya, a thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,573 MW is under construction, while another 1,560 MW plant is being developed in Surkhandarya. In parallel, work continues on a 1 GW wind power project in the Navoi region.

The parties also discussed potential acceleration of these projects, which together are valued at more than US$3 billion. Additional topics included the development of electricity distribution networks and the launch of new joint initiatives in the energy sector.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides emphasized that further deepening of cooperation, introduction of advanced technologies, and expansion of investment ties will contribute to strengthening the long-term strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and Qatar.
