Uzbekistan’s National Commission Investigates Reports of Forced Cotton Picking in Sariasiy District
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Social media has circulated reports alleging that the Deputy Hokim of Sariasiy District in Surkhandarya Region is reportedly forcing neighborhood activists to participate in cotton harvesting.
According to the Senate of Uzbekistan, the issue has been taken under the supervision of the National Commission for Combating Human Trafficking and Ensuring Decent Work. The situation will be promptly investigated, and the actions of the officials involved will be assessed in accordance with the law.
The National Commission strongly condemns such cases and, together with relevant ministries and agencies, will take measures to prevent employees from being involved in work unrelated to their official duties.
Citizens are urged to report any instances of forced labor, violations of decent work conditions, or restrictions on rest through the hotline numbers 1176 and 1092.
Each report will be reviewed in the prescribed manner, and the personal data of complainants will remain confidential. Additional information will be provided following the investigation.
