Uzbekistan to Allocate 8 Trillion Soums for Power Grid and Equipment Upgrades
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan plans to allocate about 8 trillion soums to replace transformers in high-load districts of the capital, modernize equipment, and upgrade cable networks. Specific work plans for these areas have already been approved.
According to Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamahmudov, a presidential meeting reviewed measures to ensure stable power supply to Tashkent.
Special attention was given to addressing shortcomings accumulated over past years, preparing for the autumn-winter season, and meeting the growing demand for electricity amid population growth and large-scale construction.
The minister noted that mechanisms for cooperation, implementation deadlines, and strict quality control requirements have been defined. The energy sector is introducing digitalization while enhancing employee skills and accountability.
A city-wide digital platform has been created to ensure transparency, and a prosecutor’s oversight mechanism has been introduced. Strict measures will be applied in cases of corruption. Each district of the capital now has a work list, resources, and funding sources identified.
The president emphasized that the use of modern technologies and compliance with energy efficiency standards are essential for the reliability of the power system. He instructed to ensure strict accounting of all work, compliance with legislation, and coordinated action among all agencies, including the city administration.
Tashkent Mayor Shavkat Umurzakov stated that the city now authorizes the connection of 1,000 MW annually, compared to less than 100 MW before 2017.
According to him, together with the Ministry of Energy, city administration, Ministry of Construction, and other agencies, an assessment was conducted, identifying problems at 13 substations that need modernization. A full overhaul and modernization of 207 transformers is planned.
“The president himself determined the funding sources, which allows us to start work as early as Monday. The working group will provide weekly progress updates,” Umurzakov noted.
He added that the meeting also addressed the development of nuclear energy and the implementation of the nuclear power plant construction project in Uzbekistan, which remains under the president’s direct supervision.
