Uzbekistan Launches National Green Building Design Competition

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, in partnership with the Association of Young Architects of Uzbekistan, has announced the launch of the National Green Building Design Competition.

This initiative will be a key event of the 2025 Uzbekistan Green Building Forum and marks an important milestone in promoting sustainable and climate-resilient construction in the country.

The competition aims to inspire architects, designers, and students to create projects that respond to modern challenges — from harsh climatic conditions to the urgent need for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions. It reflects Uzbekistan’s growing interest in sustainable development and its commitment to aligning with international standards in green architecture.

The contest is particularly relevant given the country’s climate, characterized by hot summers, limited water resources, and significant seasonal temperature fluctuations. Under these conditions, building energy efficiency and climate adaptation are essential. Modern architectural approaches can significantly reduce environmental impact, lower operational costs, and improve comfort and health for residents.

The competition includes two categories: one for architecture students and another for practicing professionals. Participants may submit either completed projects or new designs developed specifically for the competition. The main evaluation criterion will be the demonstration of a sustainable approach, including climate-adaptive concepts, energy-efficient technologies, eco-friendly materials, and the application of modern green building tools.

Applications are open online until 10 September 2025. Results will be announced on October 6, with the final event to be held in Tashkent as part of the forum on sustainable architecture and construction.

In addition, IFC and the Association of Young Architects will host a free training webinar titled Fundamentals of Green Building on 14 August 2025, at 11:00 AM Tashkent time. The lecture will be delivered by Vasudevan Kadalayil, an architect and international consultant on sustainable construction, renowned for his projects across Asia and Africa.

The webinar program will include a theoretical introduction to the core principles of sustainable design and a practical demonstration of the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) tool developed by IFC.
