Uzbekistan and South Korea begin feasibility study for new high-speed railway
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Work has commenced in Uzbekistan on the feasibility study (FS) for the construction of a dedicated high-speed passenger railway between Tashkent and Samarkand.
As previously announced, on 10 October 2023, the President of Uzbekistan signed resolution "On Measures for the Fundamental Reform of the Railway Transport Sector," which set the task of developing the FS for this project.
An agreement has been reached for the feasibility study to be conducted by a consortium of companies, including Saman Engineering, Dong Myeong Engineering Consultants & Architecture Co., Ltd, Korea Railroad Corporation, and Korea National Railway, with financial support from Korea Eximbank in the form of a grant.
On 14 February, a meeting was held with the participation of Deputy Minister of Transport Jasurbek Choriev, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Uzbekistan, Won Do-Yeon, the head of Korea Eximbank’s Tashkent office, Sangjin Kang, First Deputy Chairman of Uzbekistan Railways Hikmatulla Rakhmetov, as well as representatives from relevant ministries, agencies, and the Korean consortium.
During the meeting, the Korean side presented a report on the preparation of the feasibility study. Additionally, corresponding documents were signed, paving the way for the practical implementation of this project phase.
