Uzbek Ministry of Agriculture comments on onion price surge

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Ministry of Agriculture has commented on the rise in onion prices observed in the Surkhandarya region and neighboring areas. According to reports from users, prices for the new onion harvest have significantly differed from previous years.

The Ministry explained that in 2024, the reduction in onion prices during May and June to 500–1000 soums led to a reduction in planting areas for this crop in some regions. However, despite this, the country expects a harvest of 1,412,000 tons of onions this year, which is 12,000 tons more than in 2024.

As of April 1, the price of onions was between 7,000–8,000 soums, but in recent days it has dropped to 4,000–5,000 soums. "According to the ripening schedule, the price of onions is expected to decrease to 2,000–2,500 soums by 15 April," the statement said.

Additionally, the Ministry noted that at the beginning of each agricultural season, there is a temporary increase in prices for the first harvested products, which then decline. This is due to the costs incurred by farmers for innovative agronomic methods, which allow for production to be harvested 10–15 days earlier than usual.
