Uzatom Delegation Studies Belarus’ Experience in Nuclear Power Plant Construction and Operation
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 5–6 August, a delegation from the Uzatom Agency is on a working visit to the Republic of Belarus. The visit, organized at the instruction of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, aims to study in detail Belarus’ experience in the construction and operation of nuclear power plants and assess the possibility of applying it in the development of Uzbekistan’s first NPP.
On August 5, the Uzatom delegation met with Belarus’ Minister of Energy Denis Moroz. The parties discussed key areas of cooperation in nuclear energy, including the integration of a large-scale NPP into the national power grid, physical security of facilities, management of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste, as well as public engagement in the implementation of such projects.
The Uzbek side presented updates on the current stage of preparations for building its own nuclear power plant. In turn, Belarusian counterparts shared their experience in establishing the necessary infrastructure — from building a shift camp and a residential town for staff to localizing production and cooperating with national industrial enterprises.
Azim Akhmedkhadzhayev, Director of the Uzatom Agency, emphasized: “We regard Belarus as one of our key partners whose experience is particularly valuable for us. The successful organization of production cooperation, localization of supplies, and participation of Belarusian companies in project implementation provide an important example for building an industrial base for nuclear energy in Uzbekistan.”
Belarus’ Minister of Energy Denis Moroz noted: “The first Belarusian NPP, with a capacity of 2,400 megawatts, was commissioned in 2023. Today, about 40% of the country’s electricity is generated at this station. Companies that proved themselves during its construction now successfully cooperate with the Rosatom State Corporation in international projects. I am confident that Belarusian specialists will also make a significant contribution to the construction of Uzbekistan’s NPP.”
As part of the visit, the Uzatom delegation toured the central control room of the Belenergo dispatch service, which ensures round-the-clock centralized monitoring and coordination of all power plants, substations, and energy systems in Belarus.
The program also includes a visit to the Belarusian NPP, familiarization with the plant’s training center, and a series of bilateral meetings and working consultations on key areas of cooperation.
