Uzatom and Rosatom launch joint engineering school to train specialists for Uzbekistan’s nuclear industry
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 15 May 2025, an official meeting took place between representatives of the Agency for the Development of Atomic Energy Uzatom and the State Corporation Rosatom.
The Uzbek delegation was led by Azim Ahmedkhadjaev, Director of the agency, while the Russian side was represented by Tatyana Terentyeva, Deputy General Director for Human Resources at Rosatom.
The main topic of discussion was the training of qualified personnel for the national nuclear energy program, including the implementation of the project to build Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant, which remains under the personal oversight of the country’s President. The meeting placed particular emphasis on establishing a sustainable and multi-tiered system for training specialists capable of ensuring the effective execution of strategic objectives in the nuclear sector.
A key outcome of the negotiations was the signing of a tripartite agreement between Rosatom, Uzatom, and the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI on the establishment of an “Advanced Engineering School” at the Tashkent branch of MEPhI. This new educational cluster will serve as a platform for preparing engineering personnel capable of driving the development of Uzbekistan’s high-tech energy sector.
During the meeting, the development strategy for the Tashkent branch of MEPhI for 2025–2026 was also presented. The document outlines priorities in educational, scientific, and research activities at the branch, as well as the pathways for digital transformation of the learning process and specialist training. Special attention was given to opportunities for internships at Rosatom facilities, the expansion of academic exchanges, and the introduction of modern formats for professional retraining.
Azim Ahmedkhadjaev emphasized the importance of collaboration with Rosatom for the realization of the nuclear power plant project in Uzbekistan, noting that the partnership with the Russian side creates a solid foundation for the sustainable development of the industry.
The visit and the agreements reached marked a significant milestone in deepening cooperation between Uzbekistan and Russia in the field of nuclear energy and open new prospects for training national personnel and enhancing the country’s energy potential.
