Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The candidacy of South Korean diplomat Choi for the position of Chair of the Working Party on Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) was approved during the WTO General Council meeting held on 23 July in Geneva, Yonhap news agency reported.

South Korea has overseen Tashkent’s WTO accession process since 2013 and will now take on a key coordinating role in the negotiations.

The Chair of the Working Party plays a critical role in steering and facilitating both bilateral and multilateral negotiations among WTO member states, as well as presiding over meetings related to Uzbekistan’s accession.

The Working Party on Uzbekistan was established in 1994 and has for decades provided technical and political support to the country in its preparation and alignment with the requirements of WTO membership.
