Senate Approves Expansion of Kattakurgan City Boundaries
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At its 10th plenary session, the Senate discussed and approved a resolution to adjust the boundaries of Kattakurgan city, as well as Kattakurgan and Nurabad districts in the Samarkand region.
The expansion is aimed at improving living conditions for residents, developing engineering and utility infrastructure, constructing social facilities such as schools, kindergartens, and hospitals, and creating new jobs.
Kattakurgan is located in the northwest of Samarkand region, with a current population of about 95,000 residents across 4,400 hectares. Over the past five years, the population has grown by an average of 1,100 people annually. Additionally, around 4,000 residents and students do not have permanent registration. With a population density of 9.5 people per hectare, Kattakurgan is the most densely populated city in the region.
Under the new resolution, 1,900 hectares from Kattakurgan district and 971 hectares from Nurabad district — a total of 2,871 hectares — will be incorporated into the city. Kattakurgan district will also receive 600 hectares from Nurabad district adjacent to its borders.
Following the expansion, the city’s population is expected to exceed 150,000 by 2030, moving Kattakurgan from the category of medium-sized cities to large cities. The expansion will facilitate new infrastructure, multi-story residential complexes, accelerate urbanization, and support the establishment of new production and service facilities, creating additional jobs.
Plans include establishing a branch of the Urgut Free Economic Industrial Zone on 50 hectares, along with three small industrial zones totaling 30 hectares.
After the discussion, the Senate adopted the resolution accordingly.
