Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Energy company Saneg has completed a major environmental initiative with the launch of an automated vapor recovery system at its oil storage facilities in the Karshi and Mubarek territorial production units.

The newly implemented technical complex is designed to reduce harmful atmospheric emissions, enhance industrial safety, and minimize hydrocarbon losses during oil storage.

Vapor emissions — hydrocarbon vapors generated in storage tanks due to temperature fluctuations and during loading and unloading operations — pose a significant environmental challenge. Without specialized infrastructure, annual vapor losses can exceed 8 million cubic meters, equivalent to more than 160,000 tons of CO₂ emissions. Offsetting such emissions would require planting over 7 million trees.

Under the project, Saneg installed a closed collection and transportation system for vapors, ensuring their environmentally safe disposal. The system includes:

sealed vapor outlets from tanks,

underground pipelines for vapor transport,

a state-of-the-art flare system with up to 99% combustion efficiency.

The project was engineered and implemented by Geo Research & Development Company (GRDC), with financing provided by Swiss firm VEMA Carbon under an international greenhouse gas reduction program.

Azizbek Nazarov, Deputy CEO for Strategic Project Development at Saneg, stated:
“The implementation of this project has significantly reduced volatile organic compound emissions, minimized petroleum product losses, and enhanced industrial and environmental safety. It marks an important step toward lowering the company’s carbon footprint and aligning with international sustainability standards.”
