Right to Strike and Worker Guarantees to Be Enshrined in Labor Code
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis have approved the Senate’s proposal to amend several laws aimed at strengthening protections for citizens’ labor rights, the press service of the lower house reported.
The draft law is designed to align national legislation with the requirements of International Labour Organization conventions No. 87 on freedom of association and protection of the right to organize, and No. 98 on the right to organize and engage in collective bargaining. This will also facilitate fuller implementation of the provisions of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
The legislation introduces formal regulation of the right to strike. Closing the existing legislative gap will ensure the protection of citizens’ labor rights in accordance with international standards, emphasized the Legislative Chamber.
The Labor Code will now define the concept of a strike, establish the procedure for its conduct, and set out guarantees for workers during the strike. The law specifies rules for postponing the start of a strike, suspending, resuming, and terminating it, as well as restrictions related to its execution.
Deputies noted that the draft law aims to ensure full compliance of national legislation with international labor standards and to strengthen principles of social justice, equality, and democratic governance in practice.
