Proposal to Raise Speed Limit to 80 km/h on Five Key Streets In Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Plans are underway to increase the speed limit on five streets in Tashkent, according to Elmurad Alimov, Deputy Head of the Traffic Safety Department of the city’s Main Internal Affairs Directorate, who spoke at a session of the capital’s People’s Deputies Council on 12 August.
Alimov stated that on Bunykdor, Sebzar, Ahmad Donish, Yangi Uzbekistan streets, as well as on the Tashkent Ring Road, the permitted speed is proposed to be raised from the current 60 km/h to 80 km/h.
Additionally, based on conducted studies and international experience, there is a proposal to introduce one-way traffic on twelve streets in the capital (the list of streets has not yet been disclosed). This measure aims to reduce traffic congestion and accidents, improve road safety, and enhance comfort for all road users.
Alimov also noted that frequent power outages cause traffic light malfunctions, resulting in prolonged chaos on the roads—sometimes lasting several hours. In such situations, traffic police officers have to manually regulate traffic.
To address this issue, it is planned to install about 500 uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units at traffic lights, enabling them to operate autonomously for 5–6 hours during power outages.
It is worth recalling that in January 2023, a republican commission set a maximum speed limit of 60 km/h on several sections, including within the Small Ring Road in Tashkent, as well as on all streets in Namangan and Urgench. In April of the same year, the Cabinet of Ministers lowered the speed limit from 70 km/h to 60 km/h in all cities, including Tashkent.
