Likhachyov: Uzbekistan’s Small Nuclear Power Plant to Become Russia’s First Export-Oriented Project in Nuclear Energy

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The small modular nuclear power plant project set to be implemented in Uzbekistan will become the world’s first export-oriented product in the field of modular nuclear energy. This was announced by Alexey Likhachyov, Director General of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, as reported by TASS.

According to him, the small modular plant under construction in Uzbekistan will be the first-ever export project of a modern small-scale nuclear power plant. He also noted that work is underway to expand the project, including the design of two additional large-scale gigawatt-class power units at the same site.

The agreement to implement the project was reached in spring 2024, and a protocol was signed in the fall, outlining the start of design and engineering work. The project envisions the construction of six power units, each equipped with a 55-megawatt reactor.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025, with phased commissioning planned between 2029 and 2033.

As previously stated by Alexey Likhachyov, the project is being financed by the Uzbek side, and the possibility of a Russian loan is not under consideration at this stage.
